Facilities and Infrastructure Planning and Performance
The Office of Science operates 11 laboratories. The laboratories are: · Ames Laboratory · Argonne National Laboratory · Brookhaven National Laboratory · Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory · Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory · Oak Ridge National Laboratory · Pacific Northwest National Laboratory · Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory · Stanford Linear Accelerator Center · Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility · Notre Dame Research Laboratory
SC also operates facilities in Oak Ridge, TN, including the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education, the Federal Building, the Office of Science and Technical Information building and various support buildings. SC is also responsible for stewardship of the 24,000 acre Oak Ridge Reservation.
SC labs and facilities support the Department's missions of Science and Technology National Security, Energy Security, and Environmental Quality. Their facilities enable research in such diverse areas as structural biology, particle physics, combustion science, fusion energy, fossil energy, energy efficiency, and molecular chemistry. The laboratory buildings include laser, chemical, biological, electronic laboratories, accelerators, hot cells, and reactors. General purpose infrastructure includes administrative space, craft shops, fire stations, medical facilities, libraries, cafeterias, visitor centers, user buildings, security and communication facilities, computer centers, and general office/laboratory space.
Together, the SC laboratories and facilities have over 1,500 operational buildings and real property trailers, with 19.9 million gross square feet of space. The infrastructure of the SC laboratories is aging, with nearly half of active facility space 40 years old or older. Over 8,500 employees and users of SC research facilities are housed in wooden buildings, trailers or buildings more than 50 years old.
SC’s Facilities and Infrastructure Management System describes SC’s approach to its facilities and infrastructure management.
