Dr. Morss joined BES in 2002 as the Program Manager for the Heavy Element Chemistry activity. Lester received his Ph.D. under Burris Cunningham at the University of California, Berkeley, in the structure and thermochemistry of lanthanide and actinide compounds, and has remained active in the field since then. He taught and did thermochemical research on transition metal, rare earth, and actinide compounds at Rutgers University from 1971 through 1980. From 1980 through 2002 he was a chemist and senior chemist in the Chemistry and Chemical Technology Divisions at Argonne National Laboratory, performing fundamental research on the bonding and reactivity of transuranium elements, uranium, and rare earths in compounds and aqueous coordination complexes. At Argonne he also carried out applied research in corrosion testing of nuclear waste glasses and zeolitic materials that contain the actinides and fission products. Lester is a member and fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has been active in the American Chemical Society, serving as secretary and chair of the Nuclear Chemistry and Technology Division. In 1979-80 he did sabbatical research at the University of Liege, Belgium and in 1992 he received a Humboldt Senior U.S. Scientist Award at the University of Hannover, Germany.
