Sponsored by the Division of Geochemistry (GEOC) at the 230th
ACS National Meeting Washington, DC August 28 - September 1, 2005
This symposium will focus on the achievements and initiatives of currently
funded NSF/DOE Environmental Molecular Science Institutes. All aspects
of the EMSI’s efforts will be discussed including technique development,
research breakthroughs, educational innovations, and outreach. We encourage
a variety of EMSI participants (i.e., directors, PIs, postdocs, students,
and staff) to submit abstracts to provide a multi-level view of EMSI activities. One
goal of this symposium will be to highlight the benefits of multi-disciplinary
research in complex environmental problems. Another goal will be for the
EMSIs to share strategies for implementing team-based research, multi-disciplinary
education, and outreach on environmental issues. Given that EMSIs hope
to lead research dialogues nationally within environmental molecular science,
some presenters in this session may derive from research groups not formally
involved in an EMSI but whose research has benefited from or been stimulated
by EMSI leadership.
Topics could include (but are not limited to):
- Research discoveries that impact environmental research with emphasis
on areas of overlapping interest among EMSIs,
- Development of new instrumentation, methods, and models,
- Experiences with problems and opportunities for cross-training graduate
students,
- Incorporation of undergraduates into research,
- Techniques for outreach to K-12 students and the public, and
- Successful techniques for industrial and decision-maker interactions.
