The Harrison Rare Isotope Accelerator (RIA)
Costing Subcommittee Report

In November 1999, DOE/NSF Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) received from the Isotope Separator On Line (ISOL) Task Force the ISOL Task Force Report.  The report responded to the charge to:

provide a technical analysis of the various options for subsystems of ... a new facility for a research program along the lines indicated by the benchmark experiments outlined in the 1997 physics report "Scientific Opportunities with an Advanced ISOL Facility." It should assess the advantages and disadvantages of these options, identify preferred technologies, and prioritize needs for R&D. Consideration should be given to the maximum effective use of U.S. accelerator facilities, of major detector facilities, and of technical expertise.  ( - from the charge to the ISOL Task Force)
Shortly afterwards in preparation for the next NSAC long range plan, NSAC requested Mike Harrison of Brookhaven National Laboratory to chair a subcommittee charged with developing a full "preliminary" cost estimate for RIA.  The outcome of this subcommittee's effort is summarized below.
