Dr. Greene is the Program Manager for Energy
Biosciences. He
received both his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Biochemistry
from
Cornell
University
in 1976 and 1982, respectively.
Following various bench positions at the
National
Center
for Agricultural Utilization Research, a USDA-Agricultural
Research Service (ARS) laboratory in
Peoria
,
IL
, Rich was selected Leader of the Biopolymer Research
Unit. He
served in that capacity from 1990 to 1999, and directed a
broad program of biochemical, biophysical, microbiological
and genetic research.
Studies focused on interactions of natural
polymers, particularly polysaccharides, with biological
systems. During
his tenure, the Biopolymer Research Unit generated several
commercial products from bench discoveries, and won two
R&D 100 Awards. From
1999 until joining DOE in March 2006, Dr. Greene served as
International Program Manager for ARS.
His duties were two-fold.
He supervised the ARS overseas laboratories located
in
Argentina
,
Australia
,
China
and
France
(with worksites in
Italy
and
Greece
). He was also
responsible for facilitating and formally implementing
collaborations with foreign research organizations.
Dr. Greene is an internationally recognized
scientist, having published over 80 peer-reviewed journal
articles and patents.
He served for nine years on the Editorial Board of
Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
Major honors include two USDA Secretary Awards, an
Arthur S. Flemming Award, along with election as U.S.
Representative to the Governing Body of the Agricultural
Cooperative Research Programme, Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD). |

Dr. Stack received
his B.S. in Chemical and Cell Biology from the College of
Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University
in 1976, and his Ph.D in Biochemistry from the University of
California, Davis in 1984. Following three years
of postdoctoral work at Davis in the Department of
Bacteriology with Bob Hungate investigating the anaerobic
bacterial catabolism of cellulose, Dr. Stack joined the
Fermentation Biochemistry unit at the USDA/ARS laboratory
in Peoria, IL . There
he elucidated the structures of a number of newly-discovered
sugars thus far unique to anaerobic bacteria. Dr.
Stack joined the staff of Glycomed, Inc.
in the San Francisco
Bay Area in 1989 as the head of a small
"exploratory/discovery" research group
that centered on developing carbohydrates as
pharmaceuticals. Subsequently, he held
a number of positions with
other Bay Area biotechnology
firms, where
he acquired expertise in genomics (microarrays, DNA
sequencing)
and microfluidics, along
with additional scientific and project management
experience. Dr. Stack has over 50 peer-reviewed journal
articles and patents, including a set of patents that served
as the underlying technology platform for a start-up
carbohydrate bioanalytics firm. |
