Dr. Glownia completed his graduate studies at Yale University receiving a Ph. D. in Chemical Physics in 1981.  He spent one and one-half years as a postdoctoral fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory prior to joining the Physical Sciences Department as a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center (IBM Research Division), Yorktown Heights , NY .  In 2002 he joined Los Alamos National Laboratory where he held a number of leadership positions including serving as the Program Director for the Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program, a $130M research investment portfolio comprising 300 projects. He also served as the Deputy Center Leader at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT), a BES national nanotechnology user facility. His research interests and experience are in experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics involving ultrafast laser-based studies. These include experimental investigations of unimolecular processes using femtosecond pulse duration frequency and time resolved techniques; the discovery and development of ultrafast laser sources; nonlinear optical processes in gas phase atoms and molecules; nonlinear and quantum optics in astrophysical environments; advanced liquid crystal display design, characterization, and manufacturing; nano and meso scale ultrafast imaging techniques; sources of coherent ultrafast XUV and THz radiation; atomistic physics of ultrafast strained and shocked materials; and laser coherent control. Dr. Glownia is the author of more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, has 14 patents, and has given numerous invited presentations. He holds memberships in the Optical Society of America, the American Astronomical Society and the American Physical Society, being elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1993.
