pamphlet, Impacts
of Basic Research, provides examples of how knowledge
gained from 17 BES research areas applies to various energy
technologies. This was presented to the President’s
Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST),
Panel on Energy Research and Development on July 28, 1997. The PCAST report
(PDF, 343 pp, 4.7 MB) that followed was Federal Energy R&D for the Challenges of
the Twenty-First Century (Nov. 1997).

presents a series of 22 research highlights that were representative of the

FY 1980 and FY 1994, the Office of Basic Energy Sciences collected
brief write-ups of the program's
annual activities and highlights as a working tool to spark further
