Dr. Pedro A. Montano joined the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences in January 2001 as the Program Manager for X-ray and Neutron Scattering Facilities. Prior to joining DOE, he worked as Associate Division Director in the Materials Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, Illinois, during 1992-2000. From 1991- 2000 he also served as Senior Scientist, Leader of the Synchrotron Radiation Group, and Director of the BES Synchrotron Radiation CAT at the Advanced Photon Source (APS).

He earned his B.Sc. degree in Physics in 1966, M.Sc. degree in Physics in 1968 and D.Sc. degree in Physics in 1972 from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. He was a Post-doctoral fellow at the University of California Santa Barbara in 1972-1975, Professor of Physics at West Virginia University (1975-1985), Professor of Physics at the City University of New York (Distinguished Professor of CUNY) from 1986 to1991, and Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois-Chicago during 1991 to 2002. He has conducted research in broad scientific areas ranging from magnetism to catalysis.  He has used synchrotron radiation techniques for many years, and has expertise in the construction and operation of x-ray beam lines. He has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals, several review articles, various book-chapters and presented numerous invited talks at National and International Scientific Meetings. He has served as Councilor of the Materials Research Society (MRS) from 1979 to 1982, as co-chairman of the MRS National Meeting in Boston (1981), as Associate Editor of “ Materials Letters” 1983-1989, and as Chairman of the Gordon Conference on "Metal and Semiconductor Clusters" (1989). He has also served as an International Atomic Energy Agency Expert in Zaire (May-June, 1982), Uruguay (February-April, 1984), and in Ecuador (September 1991 and 1993). He is presently a member of the Commission on Charge, Spin and Momentum Densities of the International Union of Crystallography.
