North Hollywood, California High School Wins National Science Bowl® Championship

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham Congratulates Winners

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- North Hollywood High School of North Hollywood, California today won the 11th Department of Energy National Science Bowl«, the nation’s premier high school science and math academic competition.

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham presented North Hollywood High School the championship trophy after the team triumphed over 60 other teams this weekend in the grueling competition. The members of the North Hollywood High School national championship team are: Julia Hu, Jeff Zira, Daniel Bersohn, Jeanne Shen, David Lee and coach Len Soloff.

Secretary Abraham congratulated the winners and praised the students who competed this weekend. “You survived some very tough contests to reach this point,” said Secretary Abraham, “and no matter how you did in this week’s competition, you are winners because you have demonstrated extraordinary scientific knowledge and a determination to be the best.”

The National Science Bowl« has been sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the past 11 years. Other sponsors this year include IBM, Texas Instruments and the Bechtel Foundation. Approximately 300 students on 61 winning regional teams gathered in Washington, D.C., for the championship match. Over 11,000 students around the country competed in Science Bowl competitions this year.

Placing second in the National Science Bowl« was Troy High School of Fullerton, California. The team members are: Michael Chen, Akash Kansagra, Christopher Wen, Tejas Patel, Ziyad Jabaji and coach Kurt Wahl.

Placing third was Mission San Jose High School from Fremont, California with students Kai Dai, Ben Tseng, Rosie Wang, Elena Fabrikant, and Katherine Ng. The team is coached by Pat Moseley.

The fourth place team was Sycamore High School from Cincinnati, Ohio. Team members are Danny Ash, Avichal Garg, Mitra Ghamsari, Fima Macharet, and Nicholas J. Staubach. The coach is Cindy Parrot.

Mira Loma High School, from Sacramento, California won fifth place. Team members are Nathaniel Craig, Malini Mahendra, Michael Taylor, Chuck Yee, and Shirin Zarafshar. The team is coached by James Hill.

Rounding out the top 12 teams were:

Albuquerque Academy - Albuquerque, New Mexico Booker T. Washington High School - Tulsa, Oklahoma Centerville High School - Centerville, Ohio Gateway High School - Monroeville, Pennsylvania Paul Dorman High School - Spartanburg, South Carolina Skyline High School - Idaho Falls, Idaho Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology - Alexandria, Virginia
