Dr. Klaffky has over 30 years of experience in condensed matter and materials physics research; and the design, construction, and upgrade of X-ray and neutron facilities. He has managed various aspects of accelerator and user operations at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Lujan Center, and the Advanced Photon Source (APS), where he also held major beamline, experiment, and accelerator safety oversight roles.

Dr. Klaffky has a Ph.D. degree from the University of Virginia. Prior to joining DOE in 2005, he was Associate Division Director for Accelerator and User Operations in the Operations Division of the APS at Argonne National Laboratory. He has also held the positions of Deputy Group Leader and Experimental Area Manager at the Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the X-ray Ring Manager and Beamline Technical Liaison at the NSLS at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
